What you should know about mood boards

Mood boards are a part of every early design process …
But it’s important to consider whether the mood board you’re creating leaves more room to experiment and generate ideas, or limit your creativity and create a preconceived, stagnant concept for your client.

TRY THIS
Start with a brand story
As tempting as it may be to jump right into a Pinterest binge, it may be best to think of 1 to 3 guiding topics or keywords that help direct your client’s visual brand world. Then go into sketching with pen and pad or paper without expectations! This exercise should help expand your ideas and create a foundation/ starting point toward your visuals and brand story.
REMEMBER THIS
Your mood board should follow a story, not determine it.
Once you’ve created that foundation, seeking visual references come with more direction and focus, allowing you to understand and pitch a stronger concept to your client!
“Basing your design process on a mood board won’t create a strong brand story!”
